Safe Spaces Implementation Guide

Our coalition for scaling Safe Spaces* is proud to present this practical Implementation Guide. It outlines the core components of our shared model for Safe Spaces for in-school adolescent girls and provides step-by-step guidance for implementation.

This guide, including all attached resources, are open access and designed to be adapted to diverse local contexts. We invite other organizations to join our effort to scale up Safe Spaces for girls across West Africa and beyond.

*Our coalition is comprised of the following organizations:

  • The Centre for Girls’ Education, Kaduna, Nigeria

  • The Hallmark Leadership Initiative, Borno, Nigeria

  • La Lumière des Filles et des Femmes, Maradi, Niger

  • OASIS, California, U.S.A

A note on the process of creating this Guide:

Our coalition started with a blank paper and the question, “How do you implement Safe Spaces?” Over the course of a year, we explored how to present our shared model while accentuating the important differences in how we implement it to suit our different communities. We came to a consensus on 15 key steps of implementation, which we then broke down into substeps, tips, and resources. We systematized our knowledge and resources–including, in some instances, synthesizing them into something new–with the goal of making the implementation of safe spaces truly accessible.
