Dear Friends of the Sahel,

Warm greetings from OASIS! This holiday season, we’re sharing news about our vocational safe spaces for girls. These transformative clubs offer out-of-school girls a chance to learn a trade – delaying marriage and helping girls live the life they choose. Girls who complete this program receive life-changing literacy and numeracy training, a new vocation, and a chance to enroll in school.

Meet Zuwaira:

Zuwaira (not her real name) has never been to formal school. When she enrolled in safe spaces, she couldn’t identify a single letter or number. Within six weeks, she learned to read simple words and has discovered a love for the English language. Her favorite word is “basket.” Zuwaira remarks, “Next to getting a source of livelihood, my biggest dream has been to understand English, to read and write.” With the support of vocational safe spaces, Zuwaira is on her way to making this dream a reality.
